Meet AirAsia’s Travel Photographer for 2016

Kimberly Pauig is not new to photography competitions. Back in college, she bagged the grand prize the first time she joined a photography contest sponsored by a university-based organization. She was not able to repeat that feat on her second try (though she was part of Top 7).

But on her third, she did it again. Kimberly scored another victory when she emerged as the big winner of AirAsia Travel Photographer Contest 2016. She ruled over three finalists, which were shortlisted from hundreds of other hopefuls.

Tech and Lifestyle Journal was honored to have a short chat with the award-winning photographer during the AirAsia Travel Photographer Final Show held recently at Green Sun in Makati City.

“It started when I was in college,” recalled Kimberly, who is currently working as a writer for a digital magazine. “I took Photo Journalism class. From there, I joined campus publications and became an intern in an international news agency.”

Pursuing passion

Though she focused on her writing career after college, Kimberly did not stop pursuing her passion, seizing opportunities that can showcase and further make use of her eye for photography.

When she learned about AirAsia’s travel photography contest, she had no hesitation about sending an entry. As expected, she was shortlisted and was among the final six candidates who were sent to Macau to take on various photography tests for four days.

Kimberly shared the most difficult challenges she faced during the competition. “The climate was not really cooperative. One moment, the weather was super hot and then it would suddenly rain,” she recalled. “The weather really took its toll on us. We had to take care of our health,” she added.

Her winnings

Other than the grand prize, Kimberly considers the lessons she learned from the photography judges as well as the friendship she developed with everyone involved in the activity as her biggest takeaway from joining the competition. Talking about the other contestants, she said, “More than competitors, we were close friends.”

Kimberly’s winnings include 200,000 AirAsia BIG Points, a surprise vacation package from the carrier, and a number of other prizes from partner brands (GRID magazine and Flight 001 Philippines).

AirAsia’s Travel Photographer contest (now on its sophomore year) is part of the budget airline’s continuous effort to engage, inspire, and empower the youth to pursue their goals through traveling and sharing their personal stories and experiences through stunning photographs and images. Participants went through different rounds and were judged based on creativity, content, originality, and technical/visual presentation.
